America is… (2012)

america is a giant paradox,
bubbling like volcanoes about to explode
america is a blossomed gardenia,
whose petals have begun to unfold
america is Capricorn rising,
the truth is yet to be told
america is             foreclosed property,
drowning in all her fool’s gold

the american flagamerica is sun in the summer,
but quickly she’s growing too cold
america is grass receding,
like tides on the shores of bordeaux
a            merica is tainted emotions,
explaining herself like Rousseau
america is             Walt Whitman,
fulfilling the dreams of Thoreau

america is a black panther,
a corpse police call John Doe
america is Trayvon Martin,
a snapple and a bullet hole
america             is             america,
I don’t know, I don’t know
I don’t know.
