Who is an Artist? (2013)

you are, who sees beauty in a leper’s face
when no one else will even glance
you who in moments of shame, still smile
because “life ain’t that serious,” you say
who at night sits in silence to hear the moon’s whisper,
because inspiration is born in those words
who sees shapes morphing in clouds but never thinks
they’re animals like the cliché dictates

who dances for hours and days and weeks and months
to an inner rhythm only you hear
who finds the skeleton of a broken piano in the trash,
lugs the thing home and hangs it because you see art in garbage
who still wears 20 year old dirty converse because
those yellow stains remind you of a love long gone
you who feels a pigeon’s garbled song in the mad noise of downtown New York City
who hears beats in the rattle and roll of an A train expressing uptown
who loves the stench and perfume bending in the city streets
at 4am when everyone’s wide awake with scents of nightlife
you are, who sits with homeless men for a talk and smoke,
rather than zooming past wearing blinders like horses

you whose words seep in from left and right and later mingle on paper
you who makes love, not war, when others lavish in loud battle cries
you lonely voyager, who follows only your disposition,
who moves through life with pick and fork carving your road forward
you who needs no ratification to justify your art
you create, not because you want to, but because you have to
you paint and never finish, but the act itself is art, not the product
you question your self, you have self doubt
but you are an artist, if you read this poem.
